"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" played over footage of John with Yoko, as well as with the rest of the Beatles during the Get Back/Let It Be sessions.
1969, Abbey Road
"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" comes across as a hard rock jam by the Beatles, with a simple refrain sung over and over by John, its tough guitar parts, and its near-eight-minute length, almost half of which features no vocals. The lead guitar work is mesmerizing, anchoring the song as it becomes longer, shifts, and is engulfed by static. It was the last track on the first side of Abbey Road, and its abrupt end leads the way for George's "Here Comes the Sun" to open the second side and to set the tone for that side's more melodic pieces. Definitely one of the roughest rockers the boys did.
Noteworthy Cover: The 2007 movie musical Across the Universe featured nothing but Beatles songs in its attempt to tell the story of the 60's, and though the "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" sequence features the boneheaded symbolism that did most of the film in, the cast's performance is quite enjoyable.
