44. Power to the People

The "Power to the People" music video.
1971, Single

Hunter S. Thompson wrote in his classic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas that "Power to the People" was a political anthem which was "10 years too late," and John, in his posthumously published memoir/poetry collection Skywriting by Word of Mouth, eventually agreed. But even though it might sound somewhat dated and definitely recalls the early 70's in its feminist sentiment, it remains a rousing wake-up call to public consciousness.

Noteworthy Cover: Black Eyed Peas did a cover of the song for Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur. It's nothing great, but it's fun, and probably the only decent thing they've ever recorded. Fergie's bits are pretty solid, but when will.i.am. steps up to the mic, things get predictably grating.

Black Eyed Peas, joined by John Legend and Mary J. Blige, perform "Power to the People" in 2007.
