"Across the Universe" played over pictures of the Beatles.
1970, Let It Be
In his famous 1970 interview with Rolling Stone, John stated that "Across the Universe" contained possibly the best, most poetic lyrics he had ever written. While later trumped by "Imagine" in those regards, John was right at the time: "Across the Universe" is a beautiful song that, if listened to under the right conditions, can be completely life-affirming. It speaks such a powerful, cosmic message of love that, on February 5, 2008, it became the very first song intentionally transmitted into deep space, by NASA. It was done with the full approval of Paul, Yoko, and Apple Records, and has now become known as Across the Universe Day. "Limitless, undying love shines around me like a million suns," indeed.
Noteworthy Cover: Rufus Wainwright recorded a version of "Across the Universe" for the soundtrack to the 2001 film I Am Sam (which actually had a soundtrack consisting of nothing but Beatles covers). It's quite pretty.
