32. Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)

A video which provides sing-a-long lyrics for "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)."
1980, Double Fantasy

If you're a son and you've ever had a father or if you're a father and you've ever had a son, this song will move you. John wrote it as a declaration of love for his second son Sean, the only child he ever had with Yoko. It's a song guaranteed to make one happy, and to realize that life is worth celebrating. It includes two of the most memorable lines Lennon ever sung, though the two are memorable for vastly different reasons. "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans" has caught on simply because of its catchphrase-worthy wisdom, while "I can hardly wait to see you grow of age/But I guess we'll both just have to be patient" clings to my brain because John was murdered only three weeks after Double Fantasy's release and never got to see Sean become a man.
