37. I'm Losing You

"I'm Losing You" played over pictures of John and Yoko as well as various bits of surrealist imagery.
1980, Double Fantasy

Double Fantasy, whose cover touts it as "A Heart Play," is a John and Yoko double effort in every way possible; John does seven songs, Yoko does seven songs, and what unfolds is indeed a play of sorts as marital contentment wrestles with nagging feelings of doubt and insecurity. Their undying love wins out in the end as the album climaxes with "Hard Times Are Over," but for a moment there, things looks grim when "I'm Losing You" follows Yoko's frustrated "Give Me Something," and is in turn followed by another dark Yoko song, "I'm Moving On." With "I'm Losing You," John bares his soul, at once admitting to his infidelity ("Here in some stranger's room/Late in the afternoon"), pleading for Yoko's return ("I feel you slipping away/I'm losing you"), and taking her to task for self-righteous bitching ("Do you still have to carry that cross?" quickly followed by "Drop it!"). It's a complex, fascinating character study, proving that even into his last days John was an inspired songwriter. On the 1998 Anthology boxset, a different recording of John's vocals was given some hard rocking instrumentation by Cheap Trick, but the original version still bests it.

Noteworthy Cover: Soul chanteuse Corinne Bailey Rae did a very faithful, commendable cover for Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any videos featuring the song. Check out the CD, though; it's a mixed bag (Avril Lavigne doing "Imagine" makes the baby Jesus cry), but there's some stuff that's definitely worth it, including Rae's contribution.
