34. She Said She Said

"She Said She Said" played over great pictures of the Beatles in their prime.
1966, Revolver

Though "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" the following year would have more surreal imagery and a larger pop cultural impact, "She Said She Said" is, for my money, the most acid-soaked song John ever wrote. The song was inspired by the day in August 1965 when the Beatles shacked up with the Byrds and Peter Fonda, during which they all subsequently took LSD (except for Paul, who was wary). Fonda was trying to comfort a frightened George, and said that he knew what it was like to be dead, having almost killed himself with an accidentally self-inflicted gunshot wound as a child. To which John replied angrily, telling him to shut up and querying, "Who put all that shit in your head?" "She Said She Said" grew from this, John building it around a bad drug trip he had experienced, and the result features some of the best guitar on any Beatles song and a truly fascinating exploration of identity and self-awareness.
